It was the battle between No. 1 and No. 2 in the OSAA 4A volleyball classification Thursday night at the Pirate Palace, Coos Bay, and the two teams put on quite a show. Marshfield prevailed over Marist Catholic 3-2 to take over first-place in the Sky-Em League. It was a close match. The visiting Spartans (2-1, 12-2), from Eugene, won the first two sets, 25-17 & 25-20, but the Lady Pirates (4-0, 13-1) charged back by winning the next three, 25-23, 25-23 & 15-11. Marshfield goes to the Pleasant Hill Invitational on Saturday. Also, in the Sky-Em League Thursday, Cottage Grove downed visiting Junction City, 3-1. In other 4A matches, Newport lost at Cascade, 3-0. In the 3A, Siuslaw won at Glide, 3-0. Coquille beat visiting Sutherlin, 3-0. In 2A, Waldport lost at East Linn Christian, 3-0. Bandon won at Illinois Valley, 3-1. Reedsport won at Oakland, 3-1. In 1A, Powers beat visiting New Hope Christian, 3-1. Glendale won at Pacific, 3-0. Saturday, Oct. 5 matches have Coquille at Pleasant Hill.
