FROM COASTWIDE CONVERSATIONS TO TWEEN CREATIONS: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE AT THE COOS BAY PUBLIC LIBRARY

One Book, One Coast

The Coos Bay Public Library is proud to be part of the inaugural session of the largest book club on the West Coast. The One Book, One Coast book club has gathered people from the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California in joining together to read a single book. For this first ever event, George Takei’s book, They Called Us Enemy has been selected. This graphic memoir recounts George Takei’s childhood experience of incarceration alongside more than 120,000 people of Japanese descent, most of whom were U.S. citizens, following Executive Order 9066 in 1942.

As part of this special event this book is available in unlimited quantities to our patrons through the Libby app. We hope you will join us in reading this powerful book and attend the activities that we will be hosting that will help broaden our understanding of this dark time in American history such as a screening of Allegiance, a recording of the Broadway musical based on George Takei’s experience in the prison camps, a discussion meeting where we will discuss the book while enjoying snacks, and a live viewing party of the George Takei author talk with the LA County Library Director, Dr. Skye Patrick, and the Long Beach Public Library Director, Cathy de Leon.

Tween Club

Tweens aged 10-14 are invited to join us on the third Friday of every month for Tween Club. This program is a monthly gathering just for tweens. Every month we do different activities involving crafts or food. This month we will meet on Friday, April 17 from 3-4:30 p.m. to judge cookies. That’s right, we will determine once and for all which store-bought cookie reigns supreme through a careful tasting contest. Be prepared to eat a lot of cookies (milk and lactose free milk will be provided for palate cleansing) and vote to determine the best cookie!

Tween Cooking Club Continues!

The next meeting of the Tween Cooking Club will be Wednesday, April 15 at 3:30-4:30 p.m. and we will be making PIZZA! Tweens aged 10-14 are invited to sign up for this free fun class where they will learn to make homemade pizza. All supplies will be provided. Register for this awesome class at https://www.coosbaylibrary.org/event/copy-tween-cooking-club-osus-4-h-18379 Featured News by City of Coos Bay
