Meet the Sole Mates! 👟✨
In May of 2023, Coos Bay Public Library, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), and twenty members of the Coos Bay community formed the Sole Mates. This partnership began a two-year research study to learn the effects of walking as a group and engaging civically to improve public health and walkability in our community. The Sole Mates decided to use funds awarded by OHSU to create a free walking guide to inspire other community members to get outside, walk, and improve their health.

Join us to learn more about the project and get a guide! Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

IN REMEMBRANCE OF PRESIDENT CARTER

Flags at all City of Coos Bay properties will be at half-staff through sunset on January 28, 2025, in remembrance of President Jimmy Carter.

This follows orders from Governor Tina Kotek (https://apps.oregon.gov/oregon-newsroom/OR/GOV/Posts/Post/governor-kotek-orders-flags-lowered-to-half-staff-in-remembrance-of-president-jimmy-carter) pursuant to a Presidential Proclamation as a mark of respect for the former leader.

James Earl Carter, Jr., the thirty-ninth President of the United States, passed away on December 29, 2024. Commonly known by the name Jimmy Carter, his remarkable career in public service began in 1943 as a cadet at the United States Naval Academy. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets before becoming a decorated lieutenant. He shifted from active duty to the Navy Reserve and returned home to Plains, Georgia, to help manage his family’s peanut farm. He worked hard stewarding the land while leading his community as a church deacon, Sunday school teacher, and board member of a hospital and library. His deep faith inspired a passion for public service that led him to be elected State Senator, Georgia’s 76th Governor, and ultimately President of the United States.

Following his Presidency, President Carter advanced an agenda that elevated the least among us. Guided by an unwavering belief in the power of human goodness and the God‑given dignity of every human being, he worked tirelessly around the globe to broker peace; eradicate disease; house the homeless; and protect human rights, freedom, and democracy.
