Krubel Amare showcased traditional dances from Ethiopia’s Amhara, Tigray and Oromo regions, incorporating music and movement to celebrate the country’s cultural diversity.Performers from Ritual Azteca Huitzilopochtli brought the story of Nahui Ollin to life, embodying the balance of the four elements — fire, water, earth and air— at Ten Tiny Dances.Performers from all ten acts posed for a group photo before the start of Ten Tiny Dances, which brought together a diverse lineup of artists representing cultural and contemporary dance traditions from around the world.Choreographer Minh Tran presented “Samsara,” a meditative performance honoring his late parents and exploring the Buddhist concept of the life cycle through contemporary dance.Kelly Carlos, matriarch of the Carlos family and longtime member of Ritual Azteca Huitzilopochtli, played the drum while her children danced on the tiny stage.Dancers Hannah Davis, and Gabriel Gaffney Smith performed a contemporary ballet centered on circularity, using continuous rotation to reflect on life’s repetitive rhythms.Dancer Mike Barber portrayed Marie Antoinette in “Mike & Marie,” a solo performance that reimagined the historical figure through drag, dance and theatrical commentary.Dancers Hannah Krafcik and Kenny Frechette performed “two kids share a room,” a partner piece that explored queer siblinghood through floorwork, improvisation and intimate movement.Clad in vibrant regalia and feathered headdresses, the Carlos siblings danced barefoot to live drumming, each carrying an item that symbolized their assigned element.Andrea Parson performed “The One,” a solo work blending storytelling, physical theater and movement to reflect on themes of self-love and spiritual searching.Dancer Kenya Márquez performed two traditional dances from Veracruz, honoring the resilience of Mexican cultural traditions shaped by colonialism and African influences.Choreographer and performer Cydney Wilkes presented “Walking With Ocean,” a solo piece inspired by the Chinese Five Element Theory that blended abstract movement with an original score by Heather Perkins.Sweta Ravisankar and Shivani Joshi performed “Eternal Echoes – A Dance of Radha and Krishna,” combining Bharatanatyam and Kathak in a duet that explored divine love through rhythmic storytelling.Tonalli Carlos represented the element of earth in Ritual Azteca Huitzilopochtli’s set, the family’s first Ten Tiny Dances performance as a sibling group.

The hum of conversation quiets as a drumbeat signals the start of the opening dance. A lone performer steps into a chalk-drawn circle and is introduced as Coatlicue, the Aztec earth goddess. All eyes follow her as she rhythmically moves her feet, sounds emanating from the rattles at her ankles.
